AFTAC
U.S. Air Force
The Air Force Technical Applications Center (AFTAC) was established in 1959 and is headquartered at Patrick Space Force Base, Florida. Its primary mission is to monitor compliance with nuclear test ban treaties by detecting and analyzing nuclear explosions worldwide, using a global network of sensors. During the Cold War, AFTAC played a crucial role in verifying Soviet nuclear tests and continues to provide vital scientific and technical expertise in nuclear event detection. Over the decades, AFTAC has evolved to include cutting-edge technologies, supporting both national and international security efforts.
Air Force Safety Center
U.S. Air Force
The Air Force Safety Center (AFSEC) was established in 1995, consolidating multiple Air Force safety functions under a single organization at Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico. AFSEC is responsible for developing and managing Air Force-wide safety programs, including aviation, occupational, weapons, space, and mishap investigations. The center works to preserve combat capability by preventing mishaps and ensuring the well-being of Airmen and resources. Over the years, AFSEC has evolved to address emerging safety challenges and integrate innovative risk management strategies across the Air Force enterprise.
Air Force Weapons Laboratory
U.S. Air Force
The Air Force Weapons Laboratory (AFWL) was established in 1963 at Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico, as part of the Air Force Systems Command. Its primary mission was to research, develop, and test advanced weapon systems, with a significant focus on nuclear weapons effects and directed energy technologies. Throughout the Cold War, the laboratory played a crucial role in assessing nuclear survivability and advancing pulsed power and laser systems. In 1997, the AFWL was merged into the Phillips Laboratory, which later became part of the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), continuing its legacy of cutting-edge military research.
