History of 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion

The 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion (3rd LAR) is a United States Marine Corps unit activated in September 1983 at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, California. Tasked with providing reconnaissance, security, and screening for larger Marine forces, the battalion is equipped with LAV-25 light armored vehicles, offering speed and versatility on the battlefield. Throughout its history, 3rd LAR has deployed in support of major operations, including the Gulf War, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and the War in Afghanistan. The battalion’s motto, “The Wolfpack,” reflects its reputation for agility, teamwork, and tenacity in both reconnaissance and combat missions.

  • Origins: The 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion (3rd LAR) was activated on 16 September 1983 at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center (MCAGCC), Twentynine Palms, California.
  • Nickname: The unit is known as the "Wolfpack," a moniker that reflects its aggressive reconnaissance and combat spirit.
  • First Combat Deployment: 3rd LAR saw its first major combat action during Operation Desert Storm in 1991, conducting screening and reconnaissance missions ahead of the main Marine ground forces.
  • Iraq War: The battalion participated in the 2003 invasion of Iraq, being among the first Marine units to cross into southern Iraq and advance toward Baghdad.
  • Versatile Vehicles: The battalion is equipped with Light Armored Vehicles (LAV-25s), which provide speed, maneuverability, and firepower for reconnaissance missions.
  • Humanitarian Missions: Besides combat, 3rd LAR has taken part in humanitarian and peacekeeping missions, including operations in Somalia during Operation Restore Hope in the early 1990s.
