• Origins: The 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion (3rd LAR) was activated on 16 September 1983 at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center (MCAGCC), Twentynine Palms, California. • Nickname: The unit is known as the "Wolfpack," a moniker that reflects its aggressive reconnaissance and combat spirit. • First Combat Deployment: 3rd LAR saw its first major combat action during Operation Desert Storm in 1991, conducting screening and reconnaissance missions ahead of the main Marine ground forces. • Iraq War: The battalion participated in the 2003 invasion of Iraq, being among the first Marine units to cross into southern Iraq and advance toward Baghdad. • Versatile Vehicles: The battalion is equipped with Light Armored Vehicles (LAV-25s), which provide speed, maneuverability, and firepower for reconnaissance missions. • Humanitarian Missions: Besides combat, 3rd LAR has taken part in humanitarian and peacekeeping missions, including operations in Somalia during Operation Restore Hope in the early 1990s. • Unit Structure: The battalion is organized into a Headquarters & Service Company, Alpha Company, Bravo Company, and Charlie Company, each with its own LAV platoons. • Distinctive Insignia: The battalion’s insignia features a snarling wolf and armored vehicle, symbolizing its identity and mission. • Notable Alumni: Several Marines who served in 3rd LAR have gone on to distinguished careers, including high-ranking officers and decorated veterans. • Recent Deployments: In recent years, 3rd LAR has supported operations in Afghanistan, providing reconnaissance, security, and support to coalition forces in Helmand Province.
