History of 198th Light Infantry Brigade

The 198th Light Infantry Brigade was a unit of the United States Army that was activated during the Vietnam War. It was known for its role in conducting search and destroy missions and providing security for military bases in the region. The brigade was composed of three infantry battalions and various support units. After the Vietnam War, the 198th Light Infantry Brigade was inactivated in 1971.

ABOUT 198th Light Infantry Brigade

  • The 198th Light Infantry Brigade was activated in 1967 during the Vietnam War.
  • It was composed of three infantry battalions: 1st Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment; 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment; and 5th Battalion, 46th Infantry Regiment.
  • The brigade participated in several major operations during the Vietnam War, including the Tet Offensive in 1968.
  • In 1971, the 198th Light Infantry Brigade was deactivated as part of the overall drawdown of U.S. forces in Vietnam.
  • The brigade was reactivated in 1997 as part of the Texas Army National Guard.
  • In 2004, the 198th Light Infantry Brigade was deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
  • During its deployment to Iraq, the brigade conducted numerous combat operations and earned several unit awards for its service.
  • After returning from Iraq, the 198th Light Infantry Brigade was reorganized as the 56th Infantry Brigade Combat Team.
  • Several soldiers from the 198th Light Infantry Brigade were awarded the Bronze Star for their actions during combat in Iraq.
