198th Light Infantry Brigade

• The 198th Light Infantry Brigade was activated in 1967 during the Vietnam War. • It was composed of three infantry battalions: 1st Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment; 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment; and 5th Battalion, 46th Infantry Regiment. • The brigade participated in several major operations during the Vietnam War, including the Tet Offensive in 1968. • In 1971, the 198th Light Infantry Brigade was deactivated as part of the overall drawdown of U.S. forces in Vietnam. • The brigade was reactivated in 1997 as part of the Texas Army National Guard. • In 2004, the 198th Light Infantry Brigade was deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. • During its deployment to Iraq, the brigade conducted numerous combat operations and earned several unit awards for its service. • After returning from Iraq, the 198th Light Infantry Brigade was reorganized as the 56th Infantry Brigade Combat Team. • Several soldiers from the 198th Light Infantry Brigade were awarded the Bronze Star for their actions during combat in Iraq. • The 198th Light Infantry Brigade has a proud history of service and sacrifice in Vietnam and Iraq.
