The 1st Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment (1/31st), is a storied unit with a distinguished history, currently assigned to the 2nd Infantry Division. Originally constituted in 1916, the 31st Infantry has seen action in major conflicts including World War II, the Korean War, and the War on Terror. During the Korean War, the unit earned the nickname "Polar Bears" for its tenacity and resilience during the Chosin Reservoir campaign. Today, the 1/31st Infantry continues its legacy of service as a vital component of the 2nd Infantry Division, upholding traditions of courage and excellence.

The 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment (1-23 IN), known as "Tomahawks," traces its origins to the formation of the 23rd Infantry Regiment in 1812. The battalion has fought in major conflicts, including the Indian Wars, World Wars I and II, Korean War—where it earned a Presidential Unit Citation for actions at Chipyong-ni—and the Global War on Terrorism with deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. Throughout its history, 1-23 IN has been recognized for its courage and adaptability, serving under various divisions such as the 2nd Infantry Division and the 7th Infantry Division. Today, it continues to uphold its motto, “We Serve,” as an integral part of the U.S. Army’s mission.

The 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment—known as the “Iron Rangers”—was originally constituted in 1861 and has participated in every major American conflict since the Civil War. The unit distinguished itself during World War I and World War II, earning campaign streamers for key actions in Europe, including the Normandy landings and the Battle of the Bulge. In Vietnam, the 1/16th Infantry saw extensive combat as part of the 1st Infantry Division (“Big Red One”), conducting search-and-destroy and counterinsurgency operations. More recently, the battalion deployed multiple times to Iraq and Afghanistan, continuing its legacy of service and valor in the Global War on Terrorism.

The 1st Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment ("Buffaloes") was originally constituted in 1861 and has served with distinction in numerous conflicts, including the Civil War, Indian Wars, World Wars I and II, Korea, Vietnam, and the Global War on Terrorism. The unit earned a reputation for tenacity and valor, notably participating in the Aleutian Islands campaign during World War II and major actions during the Korean War, such as at Pork Chop Hill. Throughout its history, 1/17th Infantry has been part of several divisions, including the 7th Infantry Division. In recent years, the battalion has deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, continuing its legacy of service and sacrifice.
