The 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment (1-23 IN), known as "Tomahawks," traces its origins to the formation of the 23rd Infantry Regiment in 1812. The battalion has fought in major conflicts, including the Indian Wars, World Wars I and II, Korean War—where it earned a Presidential Unit Citation for actions at Chipyong-ni—and the Global War on Terrorism with deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. Throughout its history, 1-23 IN has been recognized for its courage and adaptability, serving under various divisions such as the 2nd Infantry Division and the 7th Infantry Division. Today, it continues to uphold its motto, “We Serve,” as an integral part of the U.S. Army’s mission.

• June 3, 1917: The 23rd Infantry Regiment is assigned to the 2nd Division during World War I. • July 1, 1917: The 23rd Infantry Regiment arrives in France to participate in World War I. • November 1918: The regiment takes part in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. • February 1950: The 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry (1-23rd) is activated at Fort Lewis, Washington. • July 1950: The 1-23rd Infantry deploys to Korea at the outbreak of the Korean War. • January 1951: The battalion fights in the Battle of Chipyong-ni, a pivotal defensive action in the Korean War. • June 1972: The 1-23rd Infantry is assigned to the 2nd Infantry Division in South Korea. • 1995: The battalion relocates to Fort Lewis, Washington, as part of the 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division. • 2004-2005: 1-23rd Infantry deploys to Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom. • 2012-2013: The battalion serves in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom.
