37 TAW, 316th OMS, Langley AFB

The 37th Tactical Airlift Wing (37 TAW), supported by the 316th Organizational Maintenance Squadron (316th OMS), operated out of Langley Air Force Base during the Cold War era. The 316th OMS provided essential maintenance and logistical support for the wing’s fleet of tactical airlift aircraft, ensuring mission readiness and rapid deployment capability. Throughout its tenure at Langley AFB, the unit participated in numerous training exercises and contingency operations, supporting both national defense objectives and overseas commitments. The dedication and expertise of the 316th OMS personnel were integral to the 37 TAW's reputation for operational excellence within the Tactical Air Command.
6594th Test Group

The 6594th Test Group was a highly specialized unit of the United States Air Force, established in 1958 and based at Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii. Its primary mission was the recovery of film canisters ejected from reconnaissance satellites, such as those from the Corona program, during the early years of space-based intelligence gathering. Using specially modified JC-130 aircraft, the unit performed daring mid-air retrievals of sensitive payloads descending by parachute over the Pacific Ocean. The 6594th Test Group’s operations played a crucial role in advancing American strategic reconnaissance capabilities during the Cold War, before being inactivated in 1986.
97th Bomb Wing

The 97th Bomb Wing was activated in 1947 as part of the United States Air Force's Strategic Air Command. Initially stationed at Biggs Air Force Base, Texas, the wing operated B-29 and later B-47 and B-52 bombers, playing a key role in America's nuclear deterrence during the Cold War. Over the decades, the 97th participated in various strategic missions and training exercises, adapting to evolving technologies and aircraft. In 1992, the wing transitioned to Altus Air Force Base, Oklahoma, where it shifted focus to air mobility and training missions as the 97th Air Mobility Wing.
21st TASS

The 21st Tactical Air Support Squadron (21st TASS) was a United States Air Force unit activated in 1965, primarily tasked with forward air control and reconnaissance missions during the Vietnam War. Stationed at various locations in Southeast Asia, including Nha Trang and Cam Ranh Bay, the squadron operated aircraft such as the O-1 Bird Dog and the O-2 Skymaster to coordinate close air support and direct air strikes in support of ground forces. The 21st TASS played a crucial role in enhancing the effectiveness of air-ground operations by providing real-time intelligence and target marking. The unit was inactivated in 1971 as U.S. involvement in Vietnam was reduced.

416th Bombardment Wing
