• Early Origins: Patrol Squadron 45 (VP-45) was originally established as VP-205 on November 1, 1942, during World War II, before being redesignated several times and finally becoming VP-45 in 1948. • World War II Service: The squadron flew the PBM Mariner flying boats and conducted anti-submarine patrols, convoy escort, and search and rescue missions in the Atlantic and Caribbean during WWII. • Berlin Airlift Support: VP-45 played a support role during the Berlin Airlift in 1948–1949, helping to maintain air routes and provide logistical support during this pivotal Cold War event. • First to Operate the P-3C Orion: VP-45 was among the first Atlantic Fleet squadrons to receive the advanced P-3C Orion, a maritime patrol aircraft, in the early 1970s, significantly enhancing its anti-submarine capabilities. • Nickname - "Pelicans": The squadron is affectionately known as the “Pelicans,” a nod to their long history of maritime patrol and their original flying boat aircraft. • Global Deployments: VP-45 has deployed to locations all over the world, including Iceland, Spain, Italy, Japan, and the Middle East, supporting NATO, UN, and U.S. operations. • Search for USS Scorpion: In May 1968, VP-45 participated in the search for the missing nuclear submarine USS Scorpion (SSN-589) in the Atlantic. • Hurricane Katrina Response: In 2005, VP-45 provided essential support and reconnaissance for relief efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina along the Gulf Coast. • Transition to the P-8A Poseidon: In 2013, VP-45 transitioned from the P-3C Orion to the state-of-the-art P-8A Poseidon, further improving its maritime patrol, surveillance, and anti-submarine warfare abilities. • Distinguished Unit Awards: Over its long history, VP-45 has earned multiple Navy Unit Commendations, Meritorious Unit Commendations, and other awards for excellence in operational performance and safety.
