Eisenhower. • Vietnam War Service: VF-142 participated in the Vietnam War, flying the F-4 Phantom II and achieving MiG kills during combat operations. • MiG Killers: On January 19, 1968, VF-142 pilots shot down a North Vietnamese MiG-21, earning their status as “MiG Killers.” • Transition to the F-14 Tomcat: In 1974, VF-142 became one of the first squadrons to transition to the iconic Grumman F-14 Tomcat. • Libya Operations: VF-142 participated in operations off the coast of Libya in the 1980s, including intercept missions during heightened tensions. • Desert Storm: The squadron flew combat air patrols and strike escort missions during Operation Desert Storm in 1991. • Squadron Insignia: The "Ghostriders" insignia features a grim reaper riding a missile, symbolizing the unit’s prowess and striking power. • Deactivation: VF-142 was disestablished on April 30, 1995, after nearly five decades of distinguished service. • Legacy: The spirit of VF-142 continues to inspire naval aviators, and its history is preserved through reunions and memorabilia by former members and enthusiasts.
