• Establishment: Heavy Attack Squadron Two (VAH-2), also known as the “Royal Rampants” or “Rogue Raiders,” was established on 1 November 1955 at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Washington. • First Aircraft: VAH-2 was initially equipped with the North American AJ Savage, one of the first carrier-based bombers capable of delivering nuclear weapons. • A-3 Skywarrior Transition: The squadron transitioned to the Douglas A-3 Skywarrior, nicknamed the "Whale" for its large size. The A-3 became the squadron’s primary aircraft and a mainstay of carrier-based heavy attack aviation. • Suez Crisis Support: Shortly after its establishment, VAH-2 deployed aboard USS Hancock (CVA-19) to the Western Pacific and was on standby during the Suez Crisis in 1956. • Cuban Missile Crisis: VAH-2 participated in the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, operating from USS Midway (CVA-41) and providing strategic deterrence and reconnaissance support. • Vietnam War Operations: VAH-2 played a significant role in the early years of the Vietnam War, providing bombing, reconnaissance, and electronic warfare support from various aircraft carriers. • Notable Deployment: In 1964, VAH-2 deployed aboard USS Constellation (CVA-64) and took part in the Gulf of Tonkin incident, one of the key events escalating U.S. involvement in Vietnam. • Nickname Origin: The “Royal Rampants” nickname came from the squadron’s insignia, which featured a rampant lion, symbolizing strength and courage. • Squadron Legacy: VAH-2 was one of only a handful of Navy heavy attack squadrons equipped with nuclear-capable bombers, reflecting the Cold War emphasis on carrier-based nuclear deterrence. • Disestablishment: VAH-2 was disestablished on 1 January 1971, as the Navy phased out the A-3 Skywarrior in favor of more modern aircraft and the heavy attack mission evolved.
