• Early Origins: Attack Squadron 55 (VA-55), also known as the "Warhorses" and previously the "Torpcats," was originally established as Torpedo Squadron VT-5 on 15 February 1943 during World War II. • World War II Service: VA-55 served aboard several aircraft carriers in the Pacific, participating in key battles such as the Gilbert and Marshall Islands campaign, the Battle of the Philippine Sea, and the Battle of Leyte Gulf. • Aircraft Evolution: The squadron transitioned through numerous aircraft types, starting with the TBF Avenger torpedo bomber in WWII, SBD Dauntless, then to jet aircraft like the A-4 Skyhawk and finally the A-7 Corsair II. • Korean War Operations: VA-55 flew combat missions from carriers such as USS Philippine Sea (CV-47) and USS Valley Forge (CV-45), providing close air support and interdiction strikes. • Name Changes: The squadron underwent several redesignations: from VT-5 to VA-6A, then VA-55 in 1948, reflecting changing roles and the Navy’s postwar reorganization. • Vietnam War Deployments: VA-55 completed multiple combat tours in Vietnam, flying A-4 Skyhawks and A-7 Corsair IIs from carriers like USS Ranger (CV-61) and USS Coral Sea (CV-43). • Operation Frequent Wind: In April 1975, VA-55 participated in the evacuation of Saigon, providing air support during Operation Frequent Wind, the final phase of the Vietnam War. • Historic Firsts: VA-55 was the first fleet squadron to operate the A-4 Skyhawk in the Pacific Fleet, marking a significant upgrade in carrier-based attack capability. • Cold War Patrols: During the Cold War, VA-55 regularly deployed to the Western Pacific, Indian Ocean, and Persian Gulf, supporting U.S. presence and power projection. • Deactivation: After more than 48 years of distinguished service, VA-55 was disestablished on 1 January 1977, having played a key role in every major U.S. conflict since World War II.
