• Establishment: Attack Squadron 172 (VA-172), known as the “Blue Bolts,” was established on 1 August 1945, originally as Bomber-Fighter Squadron VBF-82. • World War II Roots: Although established during WWII, the squadron did not see combat in that conflict due to the late date of its formation. • Carrier Deployments: VA-172 was among the first Navy squadrons to deploy jet aircraft operationally aboard aircraft carriers, pioneering carrier-based jet attack tactics. • Korean War Service: The squadron saw significant action in the Korean War, flying combat missions from the USS Essex (CV-9) and USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CV-42). • First Jet Combat Missions: VA-172 was the first Navy jet squadron to fly combat missions over Korea, operating the F2H-2 Banshee. • Aircraft Evolution: Over its history, VA-172 flew several aircraft types, including the F6F Hellcat, F4U Corsair, F8F Bearcat, F2H Banshee, and the A-4 Skyhawk. • Cuban Missile Crisis: In 1962, VA-172 participated in the naval blockade of Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis, flying from USS Independence (CVA-62). • Vietnam War Deployments: The squadron deployed multiple times to Southeast Asia, conducting air strikes and close air support missions during the Vietnam War. • Nickname “Blue Bolts”: The squadron’s nickname and insignia—a lightning bolt—symbolized its fast-striking jet attack capabilities. • Disestablishment: After more than 25 years of service, the squadron was disestablished on 15 January 1971, having played a key role in post-WWII naval aviation history.
