About USS VIRGO (AKA-20)

USS **Virgo (AKA-20)** was an Andromeda-class attack cargo ship commissioned by the United States Navy in December 1943. She served prominently in the Pacific Theater during World War II, participating in major operations such as the invasions of Saipan, Leyte, and Okinawa, where she delivered troops, equipment, and supplies under combat conditions. After the war, Virgo supported occupation forces in Asia and was decommissioned in 1946, only to be recommissioned for service during the Korean War and later the Vietnam War, providing vital logistical support. The USS Virgo earned multiple battle stars for her distinguished service before being decommissioned for the final time in 1971.

• Namesake: USS Virgo (AKA-20) was named after the constellation Virgo, following the tradition of naming attack cargo ships after constellations. • Commissioning: She was laid down on 9 August 1943 and commissioned on 15 December 1943, serving during the critical phases of World War II. • Pacific Theater Service: Virgo participated in several major amphibious assaults in the Pacific, including operations at Saipan, Tinian, Leyte Gulf, Luzon, and Okinawa. • Combat Action: During the Okinawa campaign, Virgo operated under constant threat from kamikaze attacks, supplying ammunition and cargo to frontline forces. • Post-WWII Occupation: After Japan’s surrender, she supported occupation forces in Japan, delivering vital supplies to Tokyo Bay and other ports. • Korean War Recommission: USS Virgo was recommissioned in 1950 to support United Nations forces in Korea, transporting ammunition and cargo throughout the conflict. • Vietnam War Service: Virgo was converted to an ammunition ship (AE-30) and saw extensive service during the Vietnam War, supplying fleet units off the coast of Vietnam. • Longevity: Her service life spanned over 25 years and three major conflicts: World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. • Battle Stars: USS Virgo earned six battle stars for her World War II service, two for the Korean War, and ten campaign stars for Vietnam. • Final Fate: After being decommissioned for the final time in 1971, USS Virgo was sold for scrap in 1972, ending a distinguished career.
