USS Pinckney (DDG-91)

• Named for a Pearl Harbor Hero: USS Pinckney (DDG-91) is named after Cook First Class William Pinckney, who was awarded the Navy Cross for his heroism during the attack on USS Enterprise (CV-6) at the Battle of Santa Cruz Islands in World War II. • Arleigh Burke-Class Destroyer: Pinckney is an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer, one of the most advanced surface combatants in the world, equipped with the Aegis Combat System. • Commissioned in 2004: USS Pinckney was commissioned on 29 May 2004 in San Diego, California. • First Ship with New Galley Design: Pinckney was the first US Navy ship to feature a new culinary design called the “Smart Ship Galley,” aimed at improving food service efficiency and quality. • Humanitarian Missions: Pinckney has participated in multiple humanitarian missions, including search and rescue operations and disaster relief in the Pacific region. • Search for Malaysia Airlines MH370: In March 2014, USS Pinckney was deployed in the southern Indian Ocean to assist in the search for the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370. • Advanced Weaponry: The ship is armed with Tomahawk cruise missiles, Standard Missiles, and Harpoon anti-ship missiles, as well as a Phalanx CIWS for close-in defense. • Anti-Submarine Warfare Capabilities: Pinckney features advanced sonar systems and is equipped to operate MH-60R Seahawk helicopters for anti-submarine missions. • Deployed to the Persian Gulf: The destroyer has been deployed multiple times to the Persian Gulf, participating in maritime security operations and supporting coalition forces. • Namesake's Legacy: William Pinckney, the ship’s namesake, was one of only four African Americans to receive the Navy Cross in World War II, and his legacy of bravery and service continues to inspire the crew.
