USS Macon CA-132

• USS Macon CA-132 was a Baltimore-class heavy cruiser of the United States Navy, named after the city of Macon, Georgia. • She was launched on 15 October 1944 by New York Shipbuilding Corporation in Camden, New Jersey and commissioned on 26 August 1945, just after the end of World War II. • Although completed too late for service in WWII, USS Macon played a significant role during the early Cold War era, particularly as a flagship in the Mediterranean with the 6th Fleet. • Macon was involved in the Suez Crisis of 1956, helping to evacuate American citizens and show US presence during the conflict in the Middle East. • The ship underwent conversion to a guided missile cruiser (projected as CG-132), but the conversion was cancelled before completion, and she retained her original designation. • USS Macon's crew participated in multiple NATO exercises, enhancing cooperation and interoperability with allied navies during the tense years of the Cold War. • The ship was awarded the Navy Occupation Service Medal for her service in postwar Europe, as well as the National Defense Service Medal. • During her service, Macon hosted several dignitaries and VIPs, including the King and Queen of Greece during a good-will visit to Athens in 1950. • An interesting incident occurred in 1954 when Macon responded to a fire aboard the Italian liner Andrea Doria: the crew stood by to offer assistance, highlighting the Navy’s peacetime humanitarian role. • USS Macon was decommissioned on 10 March 1961 and placed in reserve; she was eventually struck from the Naval Vessel Register on 1 November 1969 and sold for scrap in 1973, ending her distinguished career.
