• USS Lucid (MSO-458) was an Agile-class minesweeper built for the United States Navy during the Cold War era. • The ship was launched on November 14, 1953, by Higgins Industries, Inc., in New Orleans, Louisiana. • USS Lucid was commissioned on May 4, 1955, and primarily tasked with clearing mines to ensure safe naval passage for allied ships. • During her service, Lucid participated in several significant naval exercises, including those conducted around the waters of Japan, Taiwan, and the Philippines. • She served during the Vietnam War, conducting mine-sweeping operations and patrols along the Vietnamese coast to protect allied vessels from enemy mines. • The ship was notable for her wooden hull, a design choice that reduced her magnetic signature and made her less susceptible to magnetic mines. • USS Lucid received two battle stars for her service during the Vietnam War, recognizing her crew's dedication and bravery. • Decommissioned on December 23, 1970, Lucid was eventually struck from the Navy list and sold for civilian use. • In civilian life, Lucid served as a houseboat and later as a floating warehouse, before being rediscovered by preservationists. • Today, the USS Lucid is undergoing restoration in Stockton, California, with plans to become a museum ship dedicated to minesweeper veterans and naval history.
