USS Jouett (CG-29)

• USS Jouett (CG-29) was a Belknap-class guided missile cruiser in the United States Navy, originally commissioned as DLG-29 (destroyer leader/guided missile frigate) on December 3, 1966. • The ship was named after Rear Admiral James Edward Jouett, a distinguished US Navy officer who served with distinction during the American Civil War. • USS Jouett was reclassified from a guided missile frigate (DLG) to a guided missile cruiser (CG) on June 30, 1975, as part of a Navy-wide designation update. • Jouett participated in the Vietnam War, providing naval gunfire support, plane guard duties for aircraft carriers, and patrols in the Gulf of Tonkin. • In July 1984, Jouett served as the flagship for Battle Group Bravo during RIMPAC '84, a major multinational naval exercise in the Pacific. • The ship was fitted with the Terrier missile system, a key component of her air defense capabilities, as well as anti-submarine weapons and advanced radar. • USS Jouett’s motto was “Courage, Honor, Integrity”, reflecting the values upheld by her crew throughout her service. • During her career, Jouett earned multiple awards, including the Navy Unit Commendation, the Meritorious Unit Commendation, and several campaign medals. • After nearly 27 years of service, USS Jouett was decommissioned on January 28, 1994, and later sunk as a target during the RIMPAC 1999 exercises off the coast of Hawaii. • The ship’s legacy is preserved through artifacts and memorabilia, and she is remembered as a versatile and capable warship that served during both the Cold War and in combat operations.
