About USS Horne (CG-30)

USS Horne (CG-30) was a Belknap-class guided missile cruiser commissioned into the United States Navy in 1967. Originally designated as DLG-30 (frigate), she was reclassified as a cruiser (CG-30) in 1975. Throughout her service, USS Horne participated in notable operations including Vietnam War combat support, Indian Ocean deployments, and Operation Desert Storm in 1991. The ship was decommissioned in 1994 after nearly three decades of service and was eventually sunk as a target during a training exercise in 2008.

Horne, who served as Vice Chief of Naval Operations during World War II. • Unique Class: Horne was a Belknap-class guided missile cruiser, designed initially as a destroyer leader (DLG), but later reclassified as a cruiser (CG) in 1975. • Commissioning: The ship was commissioned on April 15, 1967, at the San Francisco Naval Shipyard. • Vietnam War Service: USS Horne served in the Vietnam War, providing gunfire support and carrier escort duties in the Gulf of Tonkin. • Flagship Duties: Horne served as the flagship for various commanders, including Commander, Cruiser Destroyer Group Five, and Commander, Middle East Force. • Persian Gulf Operations: She participated in multiple deployments to the Persian Gulf, notably during the Iran Hostage Crisis and the Iran-Iraq War, supporting Operation Earnest Will. • Technological Firsts: Horne was among the first cruisers to be fitted with the New Threat Upgrade (NTU), enhancing her anti-air warfare capabilities. • Disaster Assistance: In 1975, the Horne helped rescue Vietnamese refugees fleeing Saigon during Operation Frequent Wind. • Decommissioning: USS Horne was decommissioned on February 4, 1994, after nearly 27 years of service. • Final Fate: The ship met her end as a target during a live-fire training exercise in 2008, sunk off the coast of Hawaii during RIMPAC 2008.
