• USS Excel (MSO-439) was an Agile-class ocean minesweeper built for the United States Navy during the Cold War, specifically designed to clear naval mines from waterways to ensure safe passage for other ships. • The ship was launched on 29 October 1953 by Higgins, Inc., in New Orleans, Louisiana, and commissioned on 10 May 1955. • USS Excel was constructed primarily out of wood and non-magnetic materials to reduce the risk of detonating magnetic mines, a hallmark of contemporary mine warfare technology. • The ship was assigned to the U.S. Pacific Fleet and operated primarily out of Long Beach, California, participating in numerous training exercises and fleet operations. • Excel played a significant role in Vietnam War mine countermeasures, conducting minesweeping operations in Vietnamese waters to protect U.S. and allied naval forces. • Throughout her service, the ship participated in joint exercises with allied navies, including those of Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines, enhancing international cooperation in mine warfare. • USS Excel was awarded multiple commendations, including campaign stars for service during the Vietnam War, reflecting her valuable contributions to naval operations. • A unique incident in the ship's history involved rescuing fishermen in distress off the coast of California, highlighting the crew’s readiness for humanitarian missions as well as combat operations. • The ship’s motto was “Sweep Clean”, reflecting her primary mission of ensuring safe passage by clearing mines and hazards from the sea lanes. • After more than three decades of service, USS Excel was decommissioned on 30 September 1992 and later struck from the Naval Vessel Register, marking the end of an era for the U.S. Navy’s wooden minesweepers.
