Sumner-class destroyer, one of the most prominent US destroyer classes of World War II. • World War II Service: Commissioned on 21 September 1944, Borie joined the Pacific Fleet in late 1944, participating in the final campaigns against Japan. • Kamikaze Attack: On 9 August 1945, Borie was struck by a Japanese kamikaze off Okinawa, resulting in significant damage, 48 crewmen killed, and over 60 wounded. • Heroic Actions: Despite the damage from the kamikaze, Borie’s crew managed to save the ship, earning her the nickname "The Galloping Ghost of the Okinawa Coast." • Presidential Unit Citation: The destroyer received the Presidential Unit Citation for her outstanding performance and bravery during the Okinawa campaign. • Korean War Service: Borie saw action during the Korean War, providing gunfire support and serving on patrol and blockade duties. • Cold War Service: Following the Korean War, Borie served in the Atlantic and Mediterranean with the 6th Fleet, participating in NATO exercises and showing the flag. • Vietnam War: In the late 1960s, Borie was deployed to Vietnam, where she provided naval gunfire support and participated in "Operation Sea Dragon." • Final Fate: Decommissioned in 1972, USS Borie was transferred to the Argentine Navy, where she served as ARA Hipólito Bouchard (D-26) until 1984.
