About Naval Strike Warfare Center

The Naval Strike Warfare Center (NSWC) was established in 1984 at Naval Air Station Fallon, Nevada, to serve as the U.S. Navy’s premier command for advanced tactical training in strike warfare. Its mission focused on developing and teaching advanced air-to-ground tactics, mission planning, and strike coordination to naval aviators and aircrews. NSWC played a key role in refining strike warfare doctrine and preparing carrier air wings for deployment, particularly through realistic training exercises and simulations. In 1996, the NSWC was merged into the Naval Strike and Air Warfare Center (NSAWC), further expanding its mission to integrate strike, air warfare, and electronic warfare training.

• Origins: The Naval Strike Warfare Center (NSWC) was established in 1984 at Naval Air Station Fallon, Nevada, as a response to the need for advanced strike warfare training for the U.S. Navy. • Nickname: The NSWC was often referred to as "Strike U," modeled after the famed "Top Gun" school for fighter tactics. • Integration: In 1996, NSWC merged with the Naval Fighter Weapons School (Top Gun), Carrier Airborne Early Warning Weapons School (Top Dome), and other schools to form the Naval Strike and Air Warfare Center (NSAWC). • Curriculum: NSWC provided advanced training in strike planning, mission execution, and the integration of airborne, surface, and subsurface assets. • Red Flag East: NSWC's training exercises were sometimes referred to as the Navy's equivalent of the Air Force's famous "Red Flag" exercises, focusing on realistic combat scenarios. • Tactical Innovations: The NSWC developed and disseminated innovative tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) for strike warfare that were adopted fleet-wide. • Desert Location: Its remote desert location in Fallon provided a vast training range, allowing for complex and realistic large-force exercises. • Role in Desert Storm: Many of the tactics and lessons taught at NSWC were credited with contributing to the operational success of U.S. Navy air strikes during Operation Desert Storm in 1991. • Joint Training: The center frequently hosted joint training with U.S. Air Force, Marine Corps, and allied forces to improve interoperability. • Legacy: Although NSWC was eventually merged into NSAWC and later the Naval Aviation Warfighting Development Center (NAWDC), its pioneering work in strike warfare continues to influence naval aviation training today.
