• The Naval Station Charleston, SC was established in 1901 as a Navy Yard for the repair and maintenance of ships. • During World War II, the base was used as a submarine base and played a key role in the war effort. • In 1996, the Naval Station Charleston was selected for closure as part of the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process. • Before its closure in 1996, the base was home to over 100 different commands and tenant activities. • Naval Station Charleston was the homeport for several ships, including the USS Yorktown and the USS Laffey. • The base also had a Naval Nuclear Power Training Unit where sailors were trained to operate nuclear reactors on submarines. • Naval Station Charleston played a role in the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, as ships were dispatched from the base to enforce a blockade of Cuba. • During the Vietnam War, the base served as a logistics hub for operations in Southeast Asia. • Naval Station Charleston was used as a filming location for the movie "Die Hard with a Vengeance" starring Bruce Willis. • Today, the former site of Naval Station Charleston is home to the Joint Base Charleston, which is a joint military installation shared by the Air Force and Navy.
