• Established in 1986: HSM-74, originally designated as HSL-44, was established on January 21, 1986, at Naval Air Station (NAS) Mayport, Florida. • Nickname "Swamp Foxes": The squadron’s nickname, “Swamp Foxes,” honors Francis Marion, a Revolutionary War leader known for his resourcefulness and guerrilla tactics in the swamps of South Carolina. • Helicopter Squadron Transition: In 2009, the squadron transitioned from the SH-60B Seahawk to the MH-60R Seahawk helicopter, prompting its redesignation from HSL-44 to HSM-74. • Multi-Mission Role: The MH-60R Seahawks operated by HSM-74 are capable of anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface warfare (ASuW), search and rescue (SAR), and electronic warfare. • Carrier Air Wing Integration: HSM-74 is attached to Carrier Air Wing Three (CVW-3), providing rotary wing aviation support to aircraft carriers in the Atlantic Fleet. • Combat Operations: HSM-74 has participated in multiple operations, including Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and ongoing missions in support of U.S. and allied interests. • Humanitarian Missions: The squadron has been involved in disaster relief operations, such as providing aid after hurricanes in the Caribbean and southeastern United States. • Safety Awards: HSM-74 has received multiple Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Aviation Safety Awards for its exemplary safety record. • International Exercises: The Swamp Foxes regularly participate in joint exercises with allied navies, such as NATO’s BALTOPS and the UNITAS multinational maritime exercise. • Historic Firsts: In 2010, HSM-74 was among the first squadrons to deploy the MH-60R “Romeo” helicopter aboard an aircraft carrier, marking a significant advancement in naval aviation capability.
