• First LAMPS Squadron: HSL-35 was the first operational Light Airborne Multi-Purpose System (LAMPS) helicopter squadron in the United States Navy. • Established in 1972: Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron (Light) 35 was established on 3 July 1972 at NAS North Island, California. • Nickname "Magicians": The squadron's official nickname was the "Magicians," and their insignia featured a wizard with a crystal ball. • SH-2 Seasprite Helicopters: HSL-35 operated the Kaman SH-2D and later the SH-2F Seasprite helicopters, which were equipped for anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare. • Deployed on Small Ships: Their helicopters regularly deployed aboard smaller surface combatants, such as destroyers and frigates, extending the fleet’s reach. • Key Role in Cold War: During the Cold War era, HSL-35 played a crucial role in tracking Soviet submarines and safeguarding U.S. naval interests. • Multiple Detachments: The squadron was organized into detachments, each with its own aircraft and crew, allowing simultaneous deployments with different ships. • Pioneering Tactics: HSL-35 developed and refined many of the helicopter anti-submarine tactics that are still in use today. • Decommissioned in 1992: The squadron was decommissioned on 1 October 1992 after 20 years of service, as the SH-2F was phased out and replaced by newer helicopters. • Legacy Lives On: Many of HSL-35’s traditions and operational lessons were carried forward by successor squadrons operating the SH-60 Seahawk family.
