• World War II Origins: VMA-223, originally designated as Marine Fighter Squadron 223 (VMF-223), was commissioned on May 1, 1942, at Ewa Field, Hawaii, and quickly deployed to the Pacific Theater during World War II. • Guadalcanal Campaign: VMF-223 became one of the first Marine aviation units to operate from Henderson Field on Guadalcanal, arriving in August 1942 and playing a crucial role in the Battle of Guadalcanal. • Ace Pilots: The squadron produced several flying aces during WWII, including Captain Marion E. Carl, who became the first Marine Corps ace with 16.5 victories. • "Bulldogs" Nickname: VMA-223 adopted the nickname "Bulldogs," which is reflected in their squadron insignia and unit spirit. • Historic Aircraft: The squadron has flown a variety of iconic aircraft, including the F4F Wildcat, F4U Corsair, AD Skyraider, A-4 Skyhawk, and currently the AV-8B Harrier II. • Korean War Service: Although not deployed as a unit during the Korean War, several VMA-223 pilots flew in combat as replacements and contributed to Marine Corps aviation history. • Vietnam War Deployments: VMA-223 deployed to Vietnam in 1965, flying close air support missions with the A-4 Skyhawk and earning multiple unit commendations for their service. • Transition to Harrier: In 1987, VMA-223 transitioned to the AV-8B Harrier II, becoming one of the first Marine squadrons to operate the vertical/short takeoff and landing (V/STOL) jet. • Operation Iraqi Freedom: The Bulldogs participated in Operation Iraqi Freedom, providing critical air support and demonstrating the versatility of the Harrier in modern combat operations. • Continuous Service: VMA-223 is one of the oldest active Marine attack squadrons, with over 80 years of distinguished service, and is currently based at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina.
