• 3rd Recruit Training Battalion (3rd RTBn) is part of Recruit Training Regiment (RTR) at Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) San Diego. The battalion is responsible for training new Marine recruits, primarily from west of the Mississippi River. • Historic Foundation: MCRD San Diego, where 3rd RTBn is located, was officially commissioned in 1921, and the tradition of recruit training stretches back over a century. • Parris Island Counterpart: The 3rd RTBn has an equivalent unit at MCRD Parris Island, which trains recruits from the eastern United States. • Nickname and Motto: 3rd RTBn is sometimes referred to as “Thundering Third,” and its motto is "Making Marines." • Famous Alumni: Many legendary Marines, including Medal of Honor recipients, began their journey in the 3rd RTBn at MCRD San Diego. • Crucible Training: All recruits must complete the Crucible—a grueling 54-hour field training exercise—before graduating, a tradition in which 3rd RTBn plays a central role. • Flag Raising on Mount Suribachi: The iconic Iwo Jima flag raising statue stands at MCRD San Diego, reflecting the depot’s commitment to instilling Marine Corps values, as experienced by 3rd RTBn recruits. • Women in 3rd RTBn: In 2021, for the first time in history, MCRD San Diego began training female recruits, with 3rd RTBn participating in this historic integration. • COVID-19 Adaptations: During the 2020 pandemic, 3rd RTBn adapted its training protocols to maintain safety and readiness, including quarantining recruits upon arrival. • Graduation Ceremony: The 3rd RTBn’s graduation parades are a San Diego tradition, drawing family members and the public to witness the transformation of civilians into Marines.
