3RD MAW

• The 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing (3rd MAW) was activated on July 18, 1942 at Marine Corps Air Station El Toro in California. • During World War II, the 3rd MAW played a critical role in the Pacific Theater, providing air support for Marine Corps ground forces in campaigns such as Guadalcanal and Okinawa. • In the Korean War, the 3rd MAW supported Marine Corps units in battles such as the Chosin Reservoir campaign, providing close air support and reconnaissance. • During the Vietnam War, the 3rd MAW operated out of bases in South Vietnam and Thailand, conducting air strikes, helicopter insertions, and medical evacuations. • In the 1990s, the 3rd MAW participated in Operation Desert Storm, providing air support for coalition forces in Kuwait and Iraq. • After the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the 3rd MAW deployed units to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. • In 2010, the 3rd MAW supported humanitarian relief efforts in Haiti following a devastating earthquake, providing airlift and medical assistance. • As of 2021, the 3rd MAW is headquartered at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in California and is the largest aircraft wing in the Marine Corps. • The 3rd MAW consists of multiple aviation units, including fighter squadrons, helicopter squadrons, and support units, making it a versatile and dynamic force. • Throughout its history, the 3rd MAW has earned numerous awards and citations for its performance in combat and humanitarian missions, showcasing the unit's dedication and excellence.
