The 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines (3/1), known as "Thundering Third," is an infantry battalion of the United States Marine Corps, first activated in March 1941. The battalion distinguished itself during World War II with notable action in the Pacific, including campaigns at Guadalcanal, New Britain, Peleliu, and Okinawa. In the Korean War, 3/1 participated in major operations such as the Inchon Landing and the Battle of Chosin Reservoir. More recently, 3/1 has deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, including heavy combat during the Second Battle of Fallujah, as well as operations in Afghanistan.
