3:6th Marines

• Historic Lineage: The 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines (3/6) was first activated in August 1917 at Quantico, Virginia, for service in World War I. • World War I Service: 3/6 earned its first combat laurels in France, participating in the campaigns of Aisne-Marne, Saint-Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne, and Champagne. • Navy Unit Commendation: For their actions at Belleau Wood and Soissons in WWI, the battalion was awarded the French Croix de Guerre with two palms and one gilt star. • Guadalcanal Veterans: During World War II, 3/6 participated in the Solomon Islands campaign, including the bitter fighting on Guadalcanal. • Iwo Jima & Okinawa: The battalion played crucial roles in the iconic Pacific battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa, two of the bloodiest battles of the war. • Cuban Missile Crisis: In 1962, 3/6 deployed to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in response to the Cuban Missile Crisis, prepared for possible combat operations. • Grenada & Lebanon: Elements of 3/6 participated in Operation Urgent Fury in Grenada (1983) and served as part of the Multi-National Peacekeeping Force in Beirut, Lebanon. • Operation Desert Storm: The battalion deployed to Saudi Arabia and Kuwait as part of the 2nd Marine Division during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm (1990-1991). • OIF & OEF Deployments: 3/6 deployed multiple times to Iraq and Afghanistan in the post-9/11 era, including the Battle of Marjah in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, in 2010. • Motto & Nickname: The battalion’s official motto is "Teufelhunden" ("Devil Dogs"), a nickname reputedly given to Marines by German troops in World War I.
