The 2nd Battalion, 28th Marines, 5th Marine Division was activated in 1944 and is best known for its crucial role during the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II. The battalion famously participated in the assault on Mount Suribachi, where its members raised the iconic American flag on February 23, 1945, an event immortalized in one of the most famous photographs of the war. The battalion faced fierce Japanese resistance, suffering heavy casualties but ultimately contributing decisively to the capture of the island. After the war, the unit was deactivated in late 1945 along with the rest of the 5th Marine Division.
