The 1st Reconnaissance Battalion (1st Recon) is a highly skilled unit of the United States Marine Corps, originally activated in March 1941. The battalion played a significant role during World War II, conducting amphibious reconnaissance and gathering intelligence ahead of major Pacific island assaults. In the Vietnam War, 1st Recon became renowned for deep reconnaissance missions and directing artillery and air strikes behind enemy lines. More recently, the battalion participated in Operation Iraqi Freedom and the Global War on Terror, maintaining its reputation for excellence in surveillance, intelligence gathering, and special operations.
