About 1ST MARINE AIR WING

The 1st Marine Air Wing is a unit of the United States Marine Corps responsible for conducting aviation operations in support of Marine Corps ground forces. It is the largest and oldest aircraft wing in the Marine Corps, with a history dating back to World War II. The 1st Marine Air Wing is based at Marine Corps Air Station Futenma in Okinawa, Japan. Its mission includes providing close air support, transportation of troops and supplies, and aerial reconnaissance.

Historical Facts

• The 1st Marine Air Wing was activated on July 7, 1941 in Quantico, Virginia. • During World War II, the 1st Marine Air Wing played a crucial role in the Pacific theater, participating in the Battle of Guadalcanal and the Battle of Okinawa. • The 1st Marine Air Wing was the first Marine Air Wing to be deployed overseas during World War II. • In 1952, the 1st Marine Air Wing was reactivated and assigned to the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing in Korea. • The 1st Marine Air Wing has been involved in numerous conflicts and operations, including the Vietnam War, Gulf War, and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. • In 1992, the 1st Marine Air Wing participated in Operation Restore Hope in Somalia, providing air support for humanitarian missions. • The 1st Marine Air Wing is based at Marine Corps Air Station Futenma in Okinawa, Japan. • In 2011, the 1st Marine Air Wing received the Meritorious Unit Commendation for its service in Afghanistan from 2008 to 2009. • The 1st Marine Air Wing consists of several squadrons, including rotary wing, fixed wing, and tiltrotor squadrons. • The motto of the 1st Marine Air Wing is "First to Fight, Always Ready."
