• USCGC Ponchartrain (WHEC-70) was an Owasco-class high endurance cutter in the United States Coast Guard, commissioned in 1946. • The cutter was named after Lake Pontchartrain in Louisiana, following the tradition of naming cutters in this class after U.S. lakes. • During her service, Ponchartrain was heavily involved in the search and rescue mission of Pan Am Flight 6 in October 1956, saving all 31 people on board after the aircraft ditched in the Pacific. • The rescue of Pan Am Flight 6 was so dramatic that it was later depicted in books and television, highlighting the USCG’s critical role in maritime aviation rescues. • Ponchartrain was involved in numerous weather patrols in the North Pacific, acting as a floating weather station and providing critical data for weather forecasting. • The cutter was also assigned to ocean station duty, helping to guide transoceanic flights and ships, a key Cold War-era mission. • In addition to rescue and patrol missions, Ponchartrain participated in anti-smuggling and law enforcement operations, enforcing U.S. laws at sea. • The ship received the Coast Guard Unit Commendation for her performance during the Vietnam War, where she served as part of Operation Market Time. • Ponchartrain was decommissioned in 1973 after almost three decades of service and was later transferred to the Republic of Vietnam Navy, where she was renamed. • The legacy of Ponchartrain lives on in Coast Guard history, remembered for her heroic rescues, Cold War service, and as a symbol of the USCG’s dedication to saving lives at sea.
