USCGC Metompkin (WPB 1325)

• Commissioned in 1980: USCGC Metompkin (WPB 1325) is an Island-class patrol boat that was commissioned by the United States Coast Guard in 1980. • Named after Metompkin Island: The cutter was named after Metompkin Island, a barrier island off the coast of Virginia, in keeping with the Island-class tradition. • Primary Missions: Metompkin’s assignments included law enforcement, search and rescue, fisheries patrol, and drug interdiction along the U.S. Atlantic coast. • Homeported in Virginia Beach: The cutter was based out of Little Creek, Virginia Beach, Virginia, for much of its service life, focusing on mid-Atlantic operations. • Operation Able Manner: In the early 1990s, Metompkin participated in Operation Able Manner, interdicting Haitian and Cuban migrants in the Caribbean. • Drug Interdiction Successes: Metompkin was involved in several high-profile drug seizures, contributing to the Coast Guard's fight against narcotics trafficking. • Rescue Operations: The crew of Metompkin was credited with saving numerous lives during search and rescue operations at sea, including dramatic rescues during severe storms. • Part of the Island-class: As one of 49 Island-class cutters, Metompkin was a workhorse of the Coast Guard's patrol fleet for three decades. • Decommissioned in 2008: The cutter was decommissioned on March 14, 2008, after over 27 years of service. • Transfer to Ukraine: After decommissioning, Metompkin was transferred to the Ukrainian Navy in 2009, where she served under the name Slavutych (P153).
