• Commissioned in 1946: USCGC Dexter (WAVP-385) was originally commissioned shortly after World War II, serving as part of the United States Coast Guard’s expansion during the postwar era. • Originally Built as a Navy Vessel: Dexter was initially constructed as USS AM-385, an Auk-class minesweeper for the U.S. Navy, before being transferred to the Coast Guard. • Weather Ship Duties: As WAVP (Weather Auxiliary Vessel, Patrol), Dexter played a key role in patrolling Atlantic weather stations, relaying crucial meteorological data for military and civilian aviation and shipping. • Rescue Operations: Dexter was involved in numerous search and rescue missions, saving dozens of lives from distressed vessels and downed aircraft during her service. • Cuban Missile Crisis Participation: During the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, Dexter participated in the naval quarantine line, helping to enforce the blockade against Soviet shipments to Cuba. • Ocean Station “Echo”: Dexter was a regular on Ocean Station “Echo” in the North Atlantic, a lonely and hazardous post where she braved rough seas and icy conditions to maintain communications and navigation aids. • Conversion to High Endurance Cutter: In 1966, Dexter was redesignated as WHEC-385 (High Endurance Cutter), reflecting upgrades and her expanded mission set. • Vietnam War Service: Dexter was deployed to Vietnam as part of Operation Market Time, conducting coastal patrols to interdict supplies and provide naval gunfire support. • Decommissioned in 1968: After more than two decades of service, USCGC Dexter was decommissioned in 1968 and subsequently sold for scrap. • Legacy: Dexter is remembered for her adaptability—serving as a minesweeper, weather ship, rescue vessel, and combat patrol craft—embodying the versatile spirit of the Coast Guard fleet.
