• Commissioning: USCGC Bear (WMEC 901) was commissioned on February 4, 1983, and is the first of the Famous-class medium endurance cutters in the U.S. Coast Guard. • Namesake: The ship is named after the original USRC Bear, a legendary 19th-century cutter famous for Arctic rescue missions and service in Alaska. • Drug Interdiction: Bear has played a key role in numerous drug interdiction operations, seizing tons of illegal narcotics and detaining smugglers throughout the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific. • Space Shuttle Recovery: USCGC Bear was part of the recovery force for several NASA Space Shuttle launches, providing safety and rescue support off the Florida coast. • Historic Rescue: In 1986, Bear rescued 33 crew members from the burning Russian freighter MV Chernomor, earning international praise for its quick and effective response. • Counter-Trafficking Missions: The ship routinely participates in Operation Martillo, targeting transnational criminal organizations moving illicit goods in the Western Hemisphere. • Humanitarian Assistance: Bear has provided aid and disaster relief during hurricanes and natural disasters, including response efforts after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. • Piracy Patrols: In 2012, Bear deployed to the coast of West Africa to support international counter-piracy operations, marking a rare Atlantic deployment for a U.S. Coast Guard cutter. • Homeport: USCGC Bear is homeported in Portsmouth, Virginia, strategically positioned for quick response missions along the Atlantic coast and Caribbean Sea. • Endurance and Capabilities: The cutter can remain at sea for 45 days without resupply, is equipped with advanced sensors and a flight deck for helicopters, and has a crew of approximately 100 personnel.
