• Historic Origins: USCG Station Lorain was originally established in 1910 as a Life-Saving Service station on the southern shore of Lake Erie in Lorain, Ohio, marking over a century of continuous service. • Transition to Coast Guard: After the merger of the Life-Saving Service and Revenue Cutter Service in 1915, the Lorain station became part of the newly-formed United States Coast Guard. • World War II Service: During World War II, Station Lorain played a role in protecting vital Lake Erie shipping lanes, which were crucial for transporting war materials and resources. • Notable Rescue: In 1952, the crew of Station Lorain heroically rescued 20 people from the icy waters of Lake Erie after a passenger vessel struck a submerged object and began to sink. • Modernization: The station underwent major renovations in 1988, replacing the original 1910 boathouse with a modern facility to accommodate new search and rescue vessels and technology. • Search and Rescue Excellence: Station Lorain responds to an average of 100 search-and-rescue cases annually, making it one of the busiest Coast Guard units on Lake Erie. • Environmental Protection: The unit is also tasked with pollution response and environmental protection missions, including responding to oil and hazardous material spills on Lake Erie. • Community Outreach: Every year, Station Lorain hosts open houses and water safety events, strengthening bonds with the local community and promoting boating safety awareness. • 9/11 Response: Following the September 11, 2001, attacks, the station increased patrols and security operations on Lake Erie to protect critical infrastructure and waterways. • Unique Ice Operations: In winter, Station Lorain is equipped to conduct ice rescues, a critical service for the local community and commercial interests when Lake Erie freezes over.
