Joint Security Area

• Unique Location: The Joint Security Area (JSA) is the only portion of the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) where North and South Korean forces stand face-to-face. • Panmunjom: The JSA is often called "Panmunjom" after the nearby village where the 1953 Korean Armistice Agreement was signed. • Military Armistice Commission (MAC): The JSA hosts meetings of the MAC, where North Korea, the United Nations Command, and sometimes South Korea discuss armistice maintenance. • Blue Conference Buildings: The famous blue buildings straddling the Military Demarcation Line are used for diplomatic meetings and negotiations. • The Axe Murder Incident (1976): Two U.S. Army officers were killed by North Korean soldiers while attempting to trim a poplar tree, leading to Operation Paul Bunyan, a massive U.S. show of force. • Defections: Several high-profile defections have occurred at the JSA, including North Korean soldiers dashing across the border under gunfire to reach the South. • Joint Security Battalion: The JSA was once patrolled by a combined unit of U.S. and South Korean troops, but since 2004, only South Korean soldiers are stationed there under the United Nations Command. • Tourist Access: The JSA is a popular and tightly controlled tourist destination, allowing visitors to briefly step into North Korean territory inside the conference rooms. • Peace House and Freedom House: These buildings in the JSA are venues for inter-Korean dialogue, including historic summits between North and South Korean leaders. • Symbol of Tension and Hope: Despite being an intense flashpoint, the JSA has also witnessed moments of hope, such as the 2018 inter-Korean summit, during which leaders crossed the border together.
