• Origins in World War I: The 3rd Battalion, 319th Field Artillery Regiment (3-319th FAR) traces its lineage to the original 319th Field Artillery, constituted in 1917 as part of the 82nd Division during World War I. • Nickname – “Brave Cannons”: The 319th Field Artillery Regiment is nicknamed the “Brave Cannons,” a moniker earned for its outstanding performance in combat operations. • Airborne Artillery: The 3-319th FAR is an airborne unit, meaning its personnel and equipment are trained for parachute insertion, supporting airborne infantry operations, notably with the 82nd Airborne Division. • Glider Artillery in WWII: During World War II, elements of the 319th Field Artillery were among the first U.S. artillery units to employ combat glider insertions in Normandy and Holland during D-Day and Operation Market Garden. • Vietnam War Service: The 3-319th FAR deployed to Vietnam, supporting the 173rd Airborne Brigade, and earned 16 campaign streamers, more than any other U.S. artillery battalion in the conflict. • Presidential Unit Citation: The 3-319th FAR was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for its actions at Dak To, Vietnam, in 1967, highlighting extraordinary heroism under fire. • First to Fire in Iraq: In Operation Iraqi Freedom, 3-319th FAR was the first field artillery unit to fire in support of the initial invasion in 2003, providing decisive fire support for the 173rd Airborne Brigade. • Global Deployments: The “Brave Cannons” have participated in operations in Panama (Operation Just Cause), Grenada (Operation Urgent Fury), Kosovo, Iraq, and Afghanistan. • Modernization: The unit has transitioned through multiple artillery systems over its history, from the M3 37mm gun in WWII to the modern M119 and M777 howitzers. • Distinguished Alumni: Several Medal of Honor recipients and senior Army leaders have served in the 319th Field Artillery Regiment, reflecting its legacy of leadership and valor.
