ETHIOPIA-US MAPPING MISSION

• Joint Operation: The Ethiopia-United States Mapping Mission was a collaborative effort between the Ethiopian government and the United States Army Map Service (AMS) from 1957 to 1972, aimed at creating accurate topographical maps of Ethiopia. • Strategic Importance: Ethiopia’s difficult terrain and lack of reliable maps made navigation and development challenging, increasing the mission's value for both civilian infrastructure and military planning. • Scope of Work: The mission mapped over 500,000 square miles, covering almost the entire country, and produced hundreds of detailed 1:250,000 and 1:50,000 scale maps. • Personnel: The mission included American military personnel, civilian cartographers, and Ethiopian officers and surveyors, fostering long-term professional relationships and knowledge transfer. • High-Altitude Challenges: Surveyors operated in Ethiopia’s rugged mountains, sometimes above 13,000 feet, contending with harsh weather, difficult logistics, and limited infrastructure. • Legacy Equipment: The project utilized state-of-the-art survey equipment for its time, including aerial photography, geodetic theodolites, and Tellurometers for electronic distance measurement. • Support for Development: The resulting maps were used for road building, resource management, national defense, and supporting the construction of the Blue Nile hydroelectric projects. • Training and Education: The mission established training schools in Ethiopia, educating local surveyors and cartographers, some of whom went on to prominent positions in government and academia. • Cold War Context: The mapping mission took place during the Cold War, reflecting U.S. interest in supporting strategic allies in Africa and countering Soviet influence in the region. • Enduring Impact: Many of the mission’s maps remained the official baseline for Ethiopian geography and development for decades, and the partnership is still remembered as a milestone in U.S.–Ethiopian military and technical cooperation.
