• Origins Date Back to 1920: The AMEDD Center & School (Army Medical Department Center and School) traces its roots to 1920 when the Medical Field Service School was established at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania, to standardize medical training. • Relocation to Fort Sam Houston: In 1946, the school moved to Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas, where it remains the “Home of Army Medicine.” • Cradle of Combat Medics: The AMEDD C&S is renowned for training the U.S. Army’s combat medics, with generations of “68W” (the current combat medic MOS) passing through its classrooms and field exercises. • Six Medical Corps: The Center & School oversees curriculum and professional education for all six Army Medical Department corps: Medical, Dental, Veterinary, Nurse, Medical Service, and Medical Specialist. • First Female Graduates: In 1944, the school graduated its first class of Army Nurse Corps officers, marking a historical moment in the integration of women into military medicine. • Innovation in Battlefield Medicine: AMEDD C&S has played a critical role in developing combat casualty care techniques—such as Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC)—adopted widely by U.S. and allied forces. • International Training Hub: The Center & School regularly hosts and trains medical personnel from allied and partner nations, enhancing global military medical cooperation. • Medical Museum: The U.S. Army Medical Department Museum, located adjacent to the school, preserves and showcases the history of Army medicine, including rare artifacts, ambulances, and field gear. • Deployment Support: Since World War II, virtually every Army medical professional deployed overseas has trained at AMEDD C&S, making it a critical support node for every major conflict. • Transformation to METC: In 2010, AMEDD C&S became the headquarters for the Medical Education and Training Campus (METC), a joint-service initiative that trains Army, Navy, and Air Force enlisted medical personnel together.
