• Origins: The Alaska Army National Guard (AKARNG) was officially established in 1940, with its history tracing back to territorial days, providing local defense against foreign threats. • World War II Service: The AKARNG played a crucial role in defending Alaska during World War II, particularly during the Aleutian Islands Campaign against Japanese forces. • Eskimo Scouts: The Alaska Territorial Guard, known as the “Eskimo Scouts,” was made up of indigenous Alaskans who patrolled the coastlines and tundra for enemy activity during WWII. • Cold Weather Specialists: The AKARNG is renowned for its expertise in cold weather and arctic warfare, regularly conducting specialized training exercises in Alaska’s harsh environment. • Disaster Response: The Guard has a long tradition of responding to natural disasters, including the 1964 Good Friday earthquake, wildfires, floods, and severe winter storms throughout the state. • Overseas Deployments: Since 9/11, Alaska Army National Guard units have deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan, Kosovo, and other locations in support of U.S. and allied operations. • Unique Aircraft: AKARNG operates UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters adapted for cold-weather operations, supporting search and rescue, medevac, and homeland security missions. • Support to Remote Communities: Due to Alaska’s size and remoteness, the AKARNG often provides vital support to isolated villages, including medical, logistical, and infrastructure assistance. • Female Trailblazers: Alaska was among the first National Guard components to integrate women into its ranks, with female soldiers serving in leadership and combat support roles. • State Partnership Program: The AKARNG maintains a partnership with Mongolia under the National Guard Bureau’s State Partnership Program, facilitating joint training and mutual support.
