• Origins in Panama: The 8th Special Forces Group (Airborne), or 8th SFGA, was activated in 1963 at Fort Gulick, Panama, as the primary Special Forces unit for Latin America and the Caribbean. • "Green Berets of the Canal Zone": The 8th SFGA earned the nickname "Green Berets of the Canal Zone" due to their prominent presence and influence in U.S. military operations throughout the Panama Canal Zone. • Training Latin American Forces: The group became renowned for training thousands of Latin American military and police personnel in counterinsurgency, unconventional warfare, and jungle operations. • Creation of the Jungle Operations Training Center: The 8th SFGA established the Jungle Operations Training Center (JOTC) at Fort Sherman, which became the premier jungle warfare school for U.S. and allied forces. • Operation Power Pack: Members of 8th SFGA participated in Operation Power Pack in the Dominican Republic in 1965, providing critical special operations support during the intervention. • Counterinsurgency Missions: The group conducted numerous counterinsurgency and civic action missions in Central and South America, often working closely with the U.S. State Department and CIA. • Humanitarian Assistance: 8th SFGA teams frequently provided disaster relief and humanitarian aid, including medical and engineering support, to remote villages throughout Latin America. • Disbandment and Legacy: The 8th SFGA was inactivated in 1972.
