The 88th Infantry Division, known as the "Blue Devil Division," was activated in August 1917 and served in France during World War I, though it saw limited combat before the Armistice. Reactivated in 1942 for World War II, it became one of the first all-draftee divisions in the U.S. Army. The division distinguished itself in the Italian Campaign, notably during the battles for Monte Cassino, the liberation of Rome, and the advance into northern Italy. After World War II, the 88th served as an occupation force before being inactivated in 1947, later reemerging in different forms within the U.S. Army Reserve.
