The 87th Maneuver Area Command (MAC) traces its lineage to the 87th Infantry Division, first activated during World War I and later reactivated for service in World War II, where it fought in the European Theater, including the Battle of the Bulge. After World War II, the unit underwent several reorganizations, eventually becoming the 87th Maneuver Area Command within the U.S. Army Reserve. During the Cold War, the 87th MAC was tasked with providing command and control for large-scale training exercises and mobilization support for Reserve Component units in the Southeastern United States. The unit was ultimately inactivated in the 1990s as part of Army Reserve restructuring, but its legacy continues through successor commands dedicated to training and readiness.
