It was initially activated in 1918 as part of the American Expeditionary Forces but was reactivated in 1944 to support the Allied invasion of Normandy. Throughout its history, the 7th Army was involved in several major campaigns, including the Battle of the Bulge and the liberation of the Dachau concentration camp. The unit was officially deactivated in 1992 as part of the post-Cold War drawdown of American forces in Europe.
