The 72nd Engineer Regiment served as the combat engineer unit within the 197th Infantry Brigade of the United States Army. Activated during the Vietnam War era, the regiment provided critical engineering support, including constructing fortifications, clearing obstacles, and building roads and bridges to enhance the brigade’s mobility and effectiveness in combat operations. The 197th Infantry Brigade, often referred to as the "Sledgehammer Brigade," saw deployments both at home for training and overseas for contingency operations.
