• Formation: The 6th Battalion, 11th Artillery (6th/11th Arty) was originally constituted during World War II as part of the U.S. Army’s field artillery forces, and has undergone several re-designations and reorganizations throughout its service. • Vietnam War Service: The 6th/11th Artillery was heavily involved in the Vietnam War, providing direct and general support artillery fire for infantry and armored units, particularly the 11th Infantry Brigade of the Americal Division. • Firebases: The battalion operated from several key firebases in Vietnam, including Firebase Bronco, Firebase Hill 4-11, and LZ Dottie, often under threat of enemy attack. • Multiple Decorations: The 6th/11th Arty received numerous unit commendations for valor and meritorious service, including the Valorous Unit Award and the Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm. • “Guns of Quang Ngai”: The battalion earned the nickname “Guns of Quang Ngai” for its role in supporting operations in the Quang Ngai province, a hotspot of enemy activity. • Mixed Artillery: The battalion was equipped with both 105mm and 155mm howitzers, allowing for flexible fire missions ranging from close support to long-range interdiction. • Notable Engagement – Operation Lamar Plain: During Operation Lamar Plain (May–August 1969), 6th/11th Arty provided critical artillery support to U.S. and South Vietnamese forces, helping to repel numerous enemy attacks. • Casualties and Sacrifice: The battalion suffered casualties from enemy mortar, rocket, and ground attacks, and several members are honored on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial for their ultimate sacrifice. • Veteran Community: Former members of the 6th/11th Arty maintain a close-knit veteran community, holding reunions and maintaining websites to honor their history and fallen comrades. • Legacy: The unit’s lineage continues as part of the U.S. Army’s artillery branch, with its campaign streamers and honors preserved in Army history.
