The 636th Tank Destroyer Battalion was activated in December 1941 and trained extensively in the United States before deploying to the European Theater during World War II. Equipped primarily with M10 tank destroyers, the battalion landed in North Africa and later participated in the Italian Campaign, supporting Allied forces through challenging terrain and fierce enemy resistance. The 636th distinguished itself in key battles, including the breakthrough at the Gustav Line and the advance toward Rome. Throughout the war, the unit earned commendations for its effectiveness in anti-armor operations and its vital role in supporting infantry advances.
